As part of Paul's final instruction to the church, he encourages them to remain alert and stand strong, doing everything in love. Paul knew that overcoming our sin natures was not simply a matter of willing ourselves to live more like Jesus. For those who responded to Paul's instruction in his letter, they would be prone to fall back into old patterns of living, and for those who were already living in the manner Paul called them to, they were prone to falling. As a church, they needed to remain on alert. This is also true for us today, we need to be looking out for one another and the schemes of the enemy! We must be on alert for the enemy, our inclination to follow our old sin natures, and of the thoughts and ways of a fallen world being slowly brought into God's Church. But we are to always do this in love. We have a responsibility to God, one another, and His Church in a world, with an enemy, intent on keeping our testimony of the greatness of our God from those separated from Him.
