Strive to Excel

Dario Agnolutto • 1 Corinthians 14:12

From the series: Dear Church

It is easy to lose sight of God's plans for His Church when we are in the midst of being the church.  We can become focused on our own needs, wants and desires.  In this process then, we lose sight of how we are intended to fit into God's bigger picture in the body of the church.  Worship in the church of Corinth had been getting out of hand.  Everyone was determined to use their gifts, apparently with little regard to how it impacted the whole of the worship gathering. Paul instructs the Corinthians to focus not on simply building themselves up in their gift areas; not just using their gifts whenever and wherever they felt a desire to, but rather, to consider how their gifts would build up the whole.  His encouragement was to "strive to excel" in building up the church - as a whole - not simply themselves.  This remains our calling today as well.
