Everywhere we go in life it seems that someone is trying to convince us of something. We hear "this is right" or "this is wrong", "this is good" or "this is bad". How do we know who or what to believe? We are surrounded by worldviews and philosophies that desire our attention and our adherence. In the Apostle Paul's day, he saw the same kinds of attacks on the church as we see today. Paul didn't encourage believers to stick their heads in the sand and ignore all the messages of the world. This is impossible. Instead, he sounded a warning not to be taken captive by philosophy or human tradition that wasn't of Christ. Paul encouraged us to stand in the face of the empty deceit of this world with the assurance that through a deeper understanding and knowledge of Christ and God’s word, we can confidently stand in God’s truth, overcoming the lies of the world.
